Bartending to Fight Breast Cancer

Monday, October 1, 2012 at 12:10 PM - Posted by Megan - (0) comments

Drink. Tip. Make a Difference. Next time you’re craving a cold beverage, belly up to the bar at Neely’s Barbecue Parlor, where one incredibly generous employee has taken the fight against breast cancer—literally—into her own hands. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bartender Michelle Milton will be donating 100 percent of her tips made during the month of October to Chemo Comfort—a volunteer grassroots organization that provides cancer patients with kits to help with the side effects of chemotherapy.

A former media account executive, Michelle made bartending her new career four years ago, and became a dedicated breast cancer awareness advocate after losing loved ones to the disease. “I’ve lost close friends to breast cancer, including the woman that was my mentor. Also both of my parents passed from other types of cancer, so this cause really hits hard for me personally.” Michelle shared.

In the past three years, she has raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer foundations by selflessly dedicating all of her tips—the bulk of her salary for the month. And at the end of October, Michelle will shave her head as an act of solidarity to everyone with the disease.

Be sure to stop by Neely’s Barbecue Parlor and say hi to Michelle. Drink up, tip till your heart’s content, and help in the fight!

Support ACS at the 7th Annual Taste of Hope Gala

Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 05:04 PM - Posted by Megan - (0) comments

All you need is a glimmer of hope to help make a difference. On Thursday, May 3, the American Cancer Society will host the 7th Annual Taste of Hope event, which brings together hundreds of New York’s food enthusiasts and the city’s most notable chefs. Taking over the sprawling space at 82 Mercer in Soho, this year’s gala will honor celebrity chef Todd English for his dedication to the cancer research community.

Guests can sample dishes from dozens of NYC’s hottest restaurants, including Beauty & Essex, Blue Ribbon Sushi, Ça Va Brasserie, Coppelia, Delicatessen, The Harrison and Empellon, sip Italian vinos from Vinitaly, creative Stoli cocktails and Nespresso beverages, and mingle with acclaimed chefs Jimmy Bradley, Michael Ferraro, Julian Medina, Eric Levine and many others.

Festivities will also include a silent auction featuring a variety of exceptional items and experiences. Wouldn’t you love to score an Iron Chef-style dinner for four prepared by chef Marc Forgione, dinner for two at the James Beard House, or a luxurious week-long stay in Los Cabos? And with all event and auction proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.

Join me in supporting ACS in their mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here. Stay connected on Twitter @ACSTasteofHope and see you next Thursday!
