SWEET victory for Doughnut Plant | NYCWFF 2011

Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 12:10 PM - Posted by Megan - (0) comments

Time for sweet seduction at one of the NYC Wine & Food Festival’s most thrilling events. So what if I just stuffed face at Burger Bash? This girl has never met a dessert that she didn’t have room for. Bring on Godiva SWEET, a treats-celebrating evening extravaganza hosted by Food Network’s Sandra Lee

  1. Doughnut Plant\'s crème brûlée and peanut butter & jelly doughnuts were crowd favorites
  2. Food Network\'s Semi-Homemade chef Sandra Lee hosted the sweet soiree
  3. db Bistro Moderne\'s plum gelée delice with ricotta mousse, poundcake & candied corn
  4. The Stanton Social\'s spiced panna cotta with POM gelée was bursting with fall flavors
  5. Sprinkles created a darling display for their mini red velvet and pumpkin cupcakes
  6. The Harrison\'s sinfully delicious sticky toffee pudding with bourbon custard & orange
  7. Gotham Bar and Grill\'s cinnamon cheesecake with roasted figs (photo: SeriousEats)
  8. The Blue Stove topped assorted mini pies with Godiva dark chocolate pearls and lemon
  9. Mark Israel savored the sweet taste of victory for his Doughnut Plant delights. Congrats!

The sprawling space at 82 Mercer was filled with tables upon tables of decadent desserts and confections from renowned NYC restaurants and celebrated pastry chefs. Perrier-Jouët flowed freely as the sugar-obsessed crowd sampled delicacies to satisfy every type of sweet tooth—from chocolates, cookies and cupcakes, to pies, pops and pralines.

Seasonal flavors shined in The Stanton Social’s spiced panna cotta with POM gelée, Locanda Verde’s cranberry spice cake with mascarpone gelato, and Gotham Bar and Grill’s cinnamon cheesecake with port-roasted figs—hands down one of the night’s best. Other favorites included crispy Godiva chocolate praline pops from Jean Georges pastry maven Johnny Iuzzini, sticky toffee pudding with bourbon custard from The Harrison, and Park Avenue Autumn’s aged goat cheese mousse with caramelized apples.

At the end of this ambrosial affair, Doughnut Plant was named the Godiva fan favorite for their doughy crème brûlée and peanut butter & jelly buns. Friday’s fifth annual SWEET left me in a sugar-filled state of bliss, and knowing that event proceeds will benefit Food Bank for NYC and Share Our Strength was just icing on the cake.

Until we sweet again…

popbar: a peek inside NYC’s addictive sweet spot

Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 09:03 PM - Posted by Megan - (0) comments

A new crop of sweets-obsessed addicts, “Popaholics,” are taking NYC by storm, one stick at a time.

Down on the corner of Carmine Street and 6th Avenue lives popbar, a vibrant little dessert haven that offers all-natural gelato, sorbetto and frozen yogurt on a stick. With their small-batch artisanal approach, popbar has been breathing new life into the crowded West Village gelato scene since opening in May 2010—and people can’t seem to get enough.

Popbars are handmade fresh daily from the highest quality ingredients (many imported directly from Italy), resulting in a healthy and authentic product that packs a serious flavor punch. In mouthwatering varieties, such as chocolate, coffee, banana, coconut, hazelnut, pistachio, blood orange and mango, all popbars are preservative and gluten free, kosher certified and contain no artificial coloring or sweeteners.

From a girl who definitely knows how authentic Italian gelato should taste, trust me, these pops are delizioso! And the most fun part about popbar? Customizing your very own myPop. You can select any popGelato, popSorbetto or YogurtPop flavor to be dipped in an assortment of chocolates and coated with tasty “poppings,” such as crushed nuts, coconut flakes, coffee grains, biscotti crumbles or brownie chunks—how sweet is that!?

The folks at NearSay.com asked me to meet with and interview popbar owners, Reuben and Daniel, to get a behind-the-scenes taste of what makes popbar so deliciously unique. Well, you certainly don’t have to twist my arm to visit a gelato shop. Check out the video of my fun-filled day with the popbar gang and find out how you can get a free coffee popGelato bar (from now until March 13th)!

Be sure to visit popbar at 5 Carmine Street (@ 6th Avenue), New York NY 10014

Thank you to Reuben, Daniel and Elaine for a very sweet afternoon!

    Sweet Potato Pup Fries

    Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 03:10 AM - Posted by Megan - (2) comments

Baked sweet potato fries are one of my favorite, easy-to-make fall side dishes. Topped with cinnamon and spice, this sweet and savory accompaniment is a perfect counterpart to many cold-weather entrées. Bursting with high levels of Vitamin A and anti-oxidant Beta-carotene, sweet spuds pack a nutrient-powered punch for dogs too and are known to aid in eyesight health.

This simple recipe is for a delicious dog-friendly version of my baked sweet potato fries (obviously sans the sprinkles of sea salt, black pepper and cayenne that I typically douse my taters with). These flavorful homemade treats are filled with natural goodness and Cooper didn’t hesitate in gobbling them right up.

Sweet Potato Pup Fries Recipe (makes about 1 cup)

  • 1 medium sweet potato
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 TBLS freshly grated pecorino cheese
  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
